Heating and hot water are not a given this high up. They are here, and so is the power to run them when the valley supply drops.
Glacier melt, twenty-five kilometres below its source, running past the orchard at a temperature that wakes you properly. Guests notice it the first night and stop hearing it by the second. That is the correct outcome.
See the resortThe road from Uttarkashi runs beside the Bhagirathi for seventy-odd kilometres, close enough that you stop hearing it. Then the gorge opens, the deodar thins, and there are apple trees - rows of them, descended from stock planted in the 1860s by a British deserter named Frederick Wilson, and tended by the same families since.
This is Harsil, 2,620 metres up and twenty-five kilometres below Gangotri. For most of the twentieth century it sat inside the inner line and outsiders were not permitted to come here at all. That is why it still looks the way it does.

Hill roads here average well under 30 km/h once you are past Uttarkashi, and a single stopped truck can hold a section for an hour. Every figure above is the honest one, not the optimistic one.
Which matters more here than it would anywhere else: there is very little to eat outside your own property once it is dark. Breakfast comes with every room. Lunch and dinner are cooked to order – rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, and Garhwali dishes when you ask for them.
Tell us before you arrive if anyone has an allergy or a dietary requirement and we will plan around it – supplies come up the same single road you do, so it is worth the warning.
Harsil is not only a night halt on the way to the Dham. The valley has its own villages, history and walks, and guests who give it a second day rarely regret it.

Harsil is the last comfortable stop before the Dham: twenty-five kilometres, about an hour when the road is clear. Pilgrims who stay here leave early, reach the temple before the buses and are back in the orchard by lunch. That is a different day from sleeping at Gangotri itself, which is higher, colder and busier. Tell us the night before and breakfast can be at the door early, or packed to take.
Families need the unglamorous things: clean rooms, hot water that works, food on site, parking, and somewhere flat to walk after dark. All of that is here. Take the altitude seriously on the first day – you will have climbed a long way from Rishikesh – and give everyone an easy evening before going up to Gangotri at 3,100 m.
